Glanbrook Youth Soccer Club prepares for championship day.
Yard sale and picture day works as fundraiser for August event
The Gazette, Jun 12, 2009

Saturday, June 6 was a big day on the calendar for the Glanbrook Youth Soccer Club.

The second annual fundraiser for the club took place at the soccer fields behind the Municipal Building, 4300 Binbrook Road, and the weather turned out to be perfect.

The yard sale has become quite popular, as shown by the number of tables set up early Saturday morning.

Carolyn Duncan, who headed the fundraiser, explained, "the event combines the annual team picture taking day and yard sale providing funds for the championship day, which this year will be held August 29.

“On that day, the fun will include a bouncing castle, police and fire truck displays, a food drive and trophies for all players under 10 years of age."

She added, "the older age division teams get team trophies and medals.

“There are mixed teams for the younger players, while age 16 and up are gender specific.

“Players can start soccer at three years right up to adult.

“A special gift for each player this year to mark the 30th anniversary of the club was a stainless steel water bottle.

“This will be a memento, as well as cutting back on the amount of plastic bottles used for each game, which also helps with the litter problem."

The membership cost at the beginning of the season covers the price of team and individual photos.

For the younger teams, games are played at the municipal park on Binbrook Road while the older teams travel as far as Caledonia, and into the east and west of Hamilton.

At Saturday’s yard sale, the Mount Hope Lions Club ran the snack bar during the day, and had a barbeque as well.

On the championship day in August, the club will donate part of the profit to the soccer club.

The Arthritis Society benefited from a table run by Bonnie McClung, with all proceeds from the sale of goods, bread, cookies and plants going to the Joints in Motion training scheme.

Another local small business took advantage of the yard sale; The Bag Ladys showed their items for sale including jewellery, bags and home decor.

This was the first time for Jen Morton, who together with her mother-in-law Karen, runs the business.

Jen said she "was pleased to get the exposure to all the families who would be at the yard sale throughout the morning.”

Don and Mandy Clowes again took the yard sale day as an opportunity to collect donations of shirts and shoes; the couple will take these to children in need in Cuba.
